As urban populations grow and expand, cities face increasing challenges in providing efficient, clean, and accessible transportation options.
For the likes of Yutong and its Australian distributor VDI, finding solutions for these challenges has always been at the top of its list.

The Yutong E7S, which will be unveiled for the first time to the Australian public at the Bus and Coach Show on VDI Australia’s stand (L09), is a revolutionary electric bus designed to meet these demands through advanced technology and a focus on Demand Responsive Transport (DRT).
“Urban areas are experiencing a surge in population density and sprawling developments, pushing residents further from city centres,” VDI national marketing manager Blake Duerden told ABC.
“This creates a pressing need for effective public transit solutions that connect commuters with main transport hubs.”
Traditional fixed-route systems often struggle to accommodate these needs, particularly in low-density areas where ridership is sparse, leading to inefficient services and increased reliance on private vehicles. This situation exacerbates urban congestion and pollution, underscoring the necessity for innovative solutions.
DRT, a flexible public transport model, offers a promising answer by providing on-demand services that adapt to passengers’ schedules and locations. This model is particularly effective in addressing “first-mile” and “last-mile” issues, bridging the gap between commuters’ homes and major transit lines.
With the advent of user-friendly apps, DRT systems can efficiently coordinate pickups and drop-offs, reducing the need for private car usage and enhancing the overall public transit experience.
“The Yutong E7S is engineered to excel in DRT environments. Its compact size and manoeuvrability make it ideal for navigating narrow urban streets and crowded areas,” Duerden says.
“Despite its smaller footprint, the E7S can comfortably accommodate up to 23 passengers, offering a practical solution for urban operators who need to balance capacity and flexibility. And with its DDA compliance, the E7S makes urban transport more accessible to all.”
At the core of the E7S is Yutong’s cutting-edge electric technology. The Yutong Electric Architecture (YEA) integrates sophisticated hardware and software systems, optimising performance and efficiency. Coupled with the Yutong Energy Storage System, the E7S achieves a practical range of up to 180 kilometres on a single charge, making it a sustainable choice for daily operations.
While the E7S is designed to excel in providing Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) services for first and last-mile connectivity, its bigger sibling, the low-floor E12, serves as a reliable workhorse for more traditional route-based services.
“The 12-metre E12 bus, a staple in urban commuting, is known for its performance, efficiency, environmental benefits, and safety features. With Yutong’s strong focus on reducing emissions and operational costs, the E12 is a critical component of VDI’s Zero-Emission Bus (ZEB) range,” Duerden says.
Transit Systems executive general manager of e-mobility and fleet innovation Mark Peters says the E12 has exceeded all of his expectations.
“Our zero-emission transition journey with the Yutong E12 Battery Electric Buses began with a single vehicle deployment in 2019,” Peters says.
“From the outset, we were impressed by its reliability and range. Today, with a fleet of 20 E12 buses, we provide a smooth, quiet, and comfortable ride for our drivers and customers.
“The transition has been seamless, with excellent support from both VDI and Yutong.”
Peters says the economic and environmental advantages of the E12 are noteworthy, with significant cost savings due to lower operating and maintenance expenses compared to traditional diesel buses. So it comes as little surprise that the E12 will be proudly displayed on VDI’s stand, right next to the E7S.
“We are proud to be at the forefront of sustainable transportation, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Yutong as we strive for a greener future,” Peters says.
The E7S is set to complete VDI’s ZEB lineup, offering operators a battery electric bus for all passenger capacity needs. With the battery performance from CATL seeing ever increasing range possibilities (the E12 is capable of up to 462 kilometres on a full charge), this greener, quieter bus experience could become the norm in metros. Like the other ZEB buses from Yutong, the E7S is equipped with an intelligent transportation system that allows operators to monitor various aspects of the vehicle’s performance in real time.
This system includes features like electronic stability control and tyre pressure monitoring, which enhance safety and reliability. For operators, this telematic data is vital to ensuring their buses are kept running with minimal downtime.
“The introduction of the Yutong E7S marks a significant step forward in the evolution of public transportation. By combining the advantages of electric propulsion with the flexibility of DRT, the E7S offers a compelling solution to the challenges faced by modern cities,” Duerden says.
“As municipalities and transit authorities worldwide seek to reduce carbon emissions and improve urban mobility, vehicles like the Yutong E7S are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of public transit.
“For cities like Brisbane where this year’s show is being held, which are increasingly prioritising sustainable transport solutions, the Yutong E7S represents not just a new bus model but a blueprint for the future of urban mobility. By investing in electric, demand-responsive transit solutions, cities can enhance accessibility, reduce congestion, and contribute to a cleaner, greener urban environment.”
Yutong is actively driving a global shift towards sustainable transportation. Their campaign, “Think Eco, Move Green,” represents more than just a slogan; it’s a bold declaration of Yutong’s dedication to a greener future. This campaign underscores Yutong’s commitment to pioneering eco-friendly technology and setting new standards in the industry.
In a testament to this commitment, Yutong will be making a significant statement at the Brisbane Bus and Coach Show, with representatives from Yutong’s global headquarters making the journey to underscore the company’s dedication to the Australian market and its broader vision.
The highlight of Yutong’s presence will be their own gala event at Brisbane Town Hall. This exclusive event will not only showcase the latest advancements in zero-emission technology but also articulate Yutong’s roadmap for the future of public transportation.
With industry leaders, media, and officials in attendance, the gala is set to be a pivotal moment, illustrating how Yutong’s partnership with Australia can shape the nation’s transportation landscape. It’s a revolutionary move, highlighting Yutong’s proactive approach to fostering sustainable urban mobility and setting a precedent for the industry worldwide.
