The latest move to address Sydney’s CBD congestion woes sees changes to bus stops around the busy Wynyard bus-rail precinct

NSW Transport has moved to reduce the queue of buses filing on and off the southern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, cramming into the busy Wynyard bus interchange.
From early December, Transport Minister John Robertson hopes to see reduced queuing from re-arranged bus stops servicing 31 STA routes intersecting in
Sydney’s CBD.
“Each morning there’s a line of buses on the harbour bridge waiting to get into the Wynyard area to drop passengers off,” Robertson says.
“Currently, buses picking up passengers around Wynyard cross paths with buses coming off the bridge.”
He says the changes from December 5 sees York Street become a drop off only area in the AM peak, with services currently departing from this location now leaving from Carrington Street.
“By shifting these stops, more kerbside space will be freed for buses letting passengers off allowing buses to move off the Harbour Bridge more quickly,” says Robertson.
“There are also benefits in the PM peak with express Northern Beaches services coming from Central now travelling straight down Clarence Street, rather than looping around the Carrington Street interchange.”
Robertson says there will also be an extra bus stand added in Clarence Street.
“These changes will significantly improve the flow of buses around the Wynyard precinct which is crucial to keeping Sydney moving,” he says.
“All up, 31 bus routes will be changing the bus stand location from where they pick up passengers at Wynyard.”
To prepare for the changes, STA will undertake an awareness campaign, including signs and posters at Wynyard and on buses.
“Staff will be at major bus stops on the Northern Beaches and at Wynyard the week before, and the week of the 5 December start date, handing out information and answering questions from commuters,” says Robertson.
The changes result from the terms agreed to in a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year between the NSW Government and the City of Sydney, led by Mayor Clover Moore.
