Works to commence on upgrading Ballina bus interchange

Upgrades on the Tamar Street Bus Interchange aim to improve traffic flow, passenger comfort and accessibility

The Ballina Shire Council has announced that upgrades for the Tamar Street Bus Interchange in Ballina’s CBD are set to commence on March 11.

The council says it has secured $1.3 million in funding from the federal government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure fund which will see the old bus shelter demolished and replaced by a new structure.

The council says the new design aims to improve traffic flow within the interchange and increase passenger comfort and accessibility.

The works will include two bays for buses to pick up and drop off passengers and improved bus entry into the interchange.

A separate taxi zone will also be built, with the existing zone to be incorporated into the bus stop while walkways will also be widened.

Throughout construction, a temporary bus zone will be located along Tamar Street. The Wigmore Arcade and carpark will also remain open with limited parking spaces.

Works on the new interchange are expected to be completed by the end of June 2024.
