The Victorian Government claims 2010 will be a bumper year for transport infrastructure and investment.
Premier John Brumby says the new year will signal the start of the State’s busiest period for public transport infrastructure projects.
“Public transport projects underway in Victoria next year would represent more than $7.8 billion of investment,” Brumby says.
“Today we are calling for tenders to join an alliance to deliver the $650 million South Morang Rail Extension – an important part of the Victorian Transport Plan.
“I am also delighted to announce that O’Donnell Griffin and Laing O’Rourke Electrification Joint Venture are the successful contractors to construct the $270 million Sunbury Electrification project as part of an alliance to improve rail services on the Sydenham-Sunbury corridor.”
Brumby says the South Morang Rail Extension is the largest ever state-funded rail project.
“When completed in 2013, the project will provide better access to high quality public transport for the growing population in Melbourne’s north,” he says.
The South Morang Rail Extension project is a comprehensive package of works which includes a rail duplication between Keon Park and Epping, a double track extension from Epping to South Morang, three major road and rail grade separations and two new stations and upgrades so the Hurstbridge line can accommodate our expanding train fleet.
Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky also revealed new designs for the South Morang Rail Extension project to lower the rail line, relocate Epping station and provide a road overpass at Cooper Street.
Works to extend the Epping line to South Morang and electrify the Sydenham-Sunbury corridor will start in 2010.
