Residents and commuters who catch bus Route 471 from Williamstown to Sunshine, will benefit from 70 extra bus services a week, Minister for Public Transport Lynne Kosky announced this month.
Kosky says extended hours of operation on the route, including an all-new Sunday service, would mean more flexible travel options for people living in Williamstown, Newport, Altona North and Sunshine.
“For the first time bus Route 471 will run until 9pm on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with a Saturday timetable operating on public holidays and a Sunday timetable operating on Christmas Day and Good Friday,” Kosky says.
The Route 471 upgrades are the result of the Brumby Government’s major overhaul of Melbourne’s bus services. Local bus routes will be overhauled in a $646 million package linked to a further $657 million plan for four Orbital SmartBus routes providing cross town links.
Wade Noonan, Member for Williamstown, says from today commuters could chose from nine extra services on Saturday, 32 new services on Sunday and 30 extra weekday services.
“The extra bus services will provide local residents and commuters with a greater ability to travel to work, to attend medical appointments, to visit family and friends, and to access the metropolitan train network,” Mr Noonan said.
Bus Route 471 (Williamstown – Sunshine, via Newport Railway Station & Altona Gate Shopping Centre) operated by Sita Bus Lines has now been extended to:
- 6am to 9pm on weekdays;
- 8am to 9pm on Saturdays and public holidays; and
- 9am to 9pm on Sundays, Christmas Day and Good Friday.
Noonan encouraged local residents to use bus Route 471, saying the improvements represented a host of new travel options for people in the area.
“These service improvements will encourage more people to leave their cars at home and take advantage of the ease and cost-effectiveness of using an efficient public transport service, particularly as petrol prices continue to rise,” Noonan says.
