Brisbane’s second busiest bus transport hub is set for an upgrade and expansion
November 24, 2011
Capacity will double at the University of Queensland Lakes (UQ) bus station with construction to start mid-December with expected completion by mid-2012.
Queensland Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk says the UQ Lakes bus station expansion would be delivered as part of TransLink’s $48 million station upgrade program.
The University of Queensland is the second largest public transport hub on the TransLink network after Brisbane city.
The upgrade will double the capacity of the existing bus station located off the Eleanor Schonell Bridge in St Lucia.
“UQ Lakes is one of our busiest stations during the University semester and it’s important we have the infrastructure and services to continue to meet that demand,” Palaszczuk says.
“The project includes an upgrade of the existing southern platform, a new northern platform, a central bus layover for up to four buses and improved passenger waiting facilities.”
Palaszczuk says the expansion featured improved lighting and 24 hour video surveillance, which would be monitored by both University security and busway operations to make travel more safe and secure.
“This expansion caters for extra bus services that were introduced as part of the two new eastern busway stations located at Stones Corner and Langlands Park which opened on August 29 which included a new high frequency route 29 – Woolloongabba to UQ,” she says.
“A lot of UQ students and staff already use public transport and we expect that demand will experience significant growth in the coming years.”
Buses will continue to run normal services during the building period but some disruptions will be experienced as the new station is built.
TransLink is working closely with Brisbane City Council, UQ and the Department of Transport and Main Roads to progress the UQ Lakes station upgrade.
