The word’s foremost international public transport association, the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), will be holding a seminar in Sydney on March 16, to discuss the role of public transport in Australia and how it can be utilised to grow Australian cities.

Peter Moore, from the Australian branch of the UITP, says Australia is missing out on opportunities for greater prosperity because of the lack of alignment on transport policy across the nation.

“Australia does not have clear coordination of the transport challenge across key Federal portfolios like industry, environment, natural resources, science and others; between the Commonwealth, the states and territories and even local government; within business; and within the community,” Moore says.

“Australia just has not given mass public transport the priority it deserves and absolutely has to do so now.”

Hans Rat, Secretary General of the International Association of Public Transport (Brussels), will provide the Keynote Presentation at the Seminar, visiting Sydney as part of his 2009 Asia Pacific Tour.

Rat will also facilitate a panel discussion of some of the major issues at the conclusion of the Seminar.
