Translink announces NFC roll out at Queensland bus stops

The exciting transport technology is already being fitted to urban Queensland stops in the coming weeks

Public transport operator Translink has announced that new near field communication (NFC) technology is being implemented at all urban bus stops in Queensland.

Translink says bus customers throughout the state will benefit from the new technology at more than 15,000 bus stops.

The NFC solution provides easy access to reliable, up to date, stop specific information, all without the need for the Translink app or searching the web.

Translink says NFC is easy to use: simply tap an NFC enabled* smartphone on the NFC case to view information about a specific stop.

Stop webpages contain bus schedules, real-time bus information where available, service notifications and other important stop information.

NFC is available on most modern smart phones and wearable devices. Android users can also enable NFC in their device settings. NFC is available for iPhone 7 and subsequent models.

Rollout of the NFC solution follows a successful trial of the technology in the greater Brisbane area.

Translink says community response to the trial was overwhelmingly positive, with the majority of customers surveyed reporting the NFC solution was very easy to use and something that they would use regularly. The trial was run over a three-month period in 2020, at several high traffic bus stops.

Translink has engaged a network of local businesses to complete the installations concurrently throughout all regions of Queensland.

Work is already underway in several local council areas and Translink expects that the NFC solution will be available in all regions by March 2023.
