Transit Systems has launched a new Safe Driver Awards program, formally recognising bus safety performance across its NSW operations during Bus Safety Week.
The awards were presented at the operator’s Tempe depot, attended by representatives from Transport for NSW, the Office of Transport Safety Investigations, BusNSW, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, NSW Police and Fire and Rescue NSW. The initiative highlights drivers who have achieved significant safety milestones, including extensive kilometres travelled without an at-fault accident.
Recipients were assessed using objective performance metrics, combining driver history records with advanced telematics analytics. This included GreenRoad performance data measuring acceleration, braking, cornering and broader defensive driving behaviours.

Transit Systems NSW managing director Rino Matarazzo says the program recognises the professionalism required to operate safely in complex urban corridors.
“Driving a bus isn’t just a job – it’s a commitment. Our drivers manage large vehicles, tight schedules, changing road conditions, and the safety of dozens of people at a time,” he says.
“Our drivers operate in some of the busiest and most dynamic road corridors in the country. Achieving these safety milestones requires skill, focus and an unwavering commitment to doing the right thing every single shift.”
He says consistent performance underpins genuine safety outcomes.
“True safety doesn’t show up in one big moment – it shows up in consistent, disciplined driving every single day.”
The Safe Driver Awards are designed to reinforce industry-leading bus safety performance standards while acknowledging the frontline workforce responsible for protecting passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
Matarazzo says measurable benchmarks strengthen both operational accountability and public confidence.
“Safety is not incidental, it is engineered, measured and continuously improved. These awards reinforce the high standards we expect and the accountability we uphold across our operations,” he says.
“The Safe Driver Awards recognise our team members who set the benchmark for safety and professionalism on our network.
“We see their effort, we value their consistency, and we want to formally and proudly acknowledge the standard they set for our broader team and the transport industry.”
The program reflects a broader shift across the bus sector toward data-driven safety management, where telematics, verified performance analytics and behavioural insights are used to reduce risk exposure and strengthen compliance.
