A striking new mural has been unveiled in Burwood, Sydney to commemorate an Australian bus industry trailblazer
At its Burwood bus depot in Sydney, operator Transit Systems has unveiled a vibrant mural that pays homage to industry trailblazer Lorna Hutchings.
Artist Christina Huynh completed the mural that was commissioned by Burwood council, with the depiction on the front façade of Burwood’s bus depot, facing onto Parramatta Road.
Transit Systems says Hutchings’ journey behind the wheel began in 1974 when she was the first female bus driver at the Burwood depot.
Almost 50 years later, Hutchings still works as a duty officer at Transit Systems’ Kingsgrove depot.
“The design shows an AEC Regent III double-decker bus with a license plate 1974.TS which represents the year Lorna Hutchings began driving as the first female bus driver at Burwood bus depot,” Huynh says.
“Two Australian Reed Warblers meet among parts of a former Regent double-decker bus in restoration. A scene where two warblers meet symbolises Burwood as an important place for a meeting between Sydney City and Western Sydney for resources such as Burwood Library or for the buzzing atmosphere, diversity and rich cultural flavours found throughout Burwood Chinatown.”
Huynh says the theme of yarn bomb and knitting is central through the design to celebrate Hutchings.
