A South African-based company claims it will save the bus industry millions of dollars a year in operating costs with technology

A telematics system is being claimed to save the bus industry millions of dollars in operating costs each year.
The technology, by South Africa-based MiX Telematicon, was on display at the Australian Bus + Coach Show 2013 in Sydney last month.
The In-Vehicle Monitoring System (IVMS) potentially improves driver behaviour, could deliver up to 10 per cent savings on annual fuel costs, a reduction in vehicle wear-and-tear, better passenger comfort and lower CO2 emissions.
The company developed the technology which consists of a device that is fitted to the vehicle’s electronics system provides real time feedback on driver performance.
The system provides fleet operators, managers and owners with an opportunity to identify where driver training is required to improve operational efficiencies.
Head of Business Development Australasia Sean Flynn says the technology is helping customers in a range of areas from reducing operating costs, to improving road safety and driver behaviour, through to providing a better passenger experience.
“Companies can monitor efficiency measures in real-time to constantly improve fleet performance and make decisions on whether further driver training is required to correct any issues identified,” he says.
“Our reporting services can also provide analysis of the data and show the direct impact on their business.”
Flynn says drivers can also monitor their own behaviour, and if they don’t correct their driving accordingly the event is recorded as an infringement.
He says there is an opportunity to generate significant savings across the board for the bus and coach industry.
