State Transit is continuing to work towards returning the Mercedes gas buses, that have been off the road due to a problem with a steering part, back into service they say in a statement released today.

The bus manufacturer, Mercedes Benz Australia Pacific, has committed to replace the component on all the State Transit buses at its expense as an initial step and this will be done progressively as the parts arrive in Australia from Germany.

Sufficient steering arms will be replaced this week and over the weekend to enable normal timetabled bus services to resume from next Tuesday, January 29.

The remainder of parts will be installed the following week.

No State Transit bus with an identified problem of the steering arms will operate on Sydney roads during this time.

“Passengers can be assured that bus services will be back to normal and buses on the road are completely safe,” State Transit says.

“State Transit has a guarantee from DailmerChrysler for the fitting of the replacement steering arms, stating they will not exhibit the same fatigue cracks for at least 200,000 kilometres.

“Further, the manufacturer, with the agreement of the RTA, has re-inspected every gas bus in the State Transit fleet as well as all private bus vehicles with the same chassis.

“State Transit will never put buses on the road unless it is sure they are completely safe,” the statement concludes.
