There will be more supervised school crossings across Queensland by the end of June says the new transport minister
March 29, 2011
There will be 15 new supervised road crossings provided across 14 Queensland schools employing up to 40 crossing supervisors in place by June 30, according to Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk.
“The 15 extra crossings reflect the tremendous population growth continuing across Queensland, as more people mean more cars around schools,” Palaszczuk says.
A new crossing was already operating at Norfolk Village State School in Southport and the remaining crossings would be rolled out before the end of June.
“The Queensland Government works closely with each school community and local council in planning supervised crossings so that it best meets the road safety requirements of the school,” says Palaszczuk.
“Normally, that means having to make changes to the road or its approaches before the supervised crossing can be established.”
When the School Crossing Supervisor (SCS) scheme started in 1984 there were 353 supervised crossings at 205 schools and by June 30 this year there will be 1,196 crossings employing approximately 1,900 supervisors at 646 schools.
“Supervised crossings are established when potential risks intensify, such as increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic,” Palaszczuk says.
“The Bligh Government is committed to keeping our children safe, and supervised crossings are an important part of that promise,”
Palaszczuk says School Crossing Supervisors not only protect the lives of children across the state each school day, but play a vital role educating children about road safety as they travel to and from school.
