Almost a dozen massive 30m concrete beams each weighing almost 60 tonnes were being put in place at the $118 million South Road/ANZAC Highway Underpass on Sunday.
“The size of the beams gives a great understanding of the size and scope of the task we face in taking ANZAC Highway over the top of a future underpass at this location,” Conlon said.
“It also represents another step in the fantastic progress we’re making on this project – all the while keeping traffic flowing along these major arterial routes.”
The first 11 beams will be installed on the southern side of the ANZAC Highway decking – being built in two halves. Another nine beams will be installed on the northern side later this year.
The beams are the newest arrivals to a site that has already seen more than 14,000 cubic metres of earth moved since major construction began in earnest late last year.
With another 26,000 cubic metres to be excavated before the project is complete, up to 80 workers are on site at any one time.
The South Road/ANZAC Highway Underpass is due for completion in late 2009.
Construction of the $118m project is the first step in the State Government’s broader plan to create a non-stop north-south strategic transport link across Adelaide.
