An appeal has begun for innovative research projects to improve workplace safety in South Australia.
Acting South Australian Minister for Industrial Relations Paul Caica has announced that applications are open for the latest round of grants to be offered under the Occupational Health Safety and Welfare Small Grants Programme.
“Funding of up to $50,000 will be provided for initiatives which will contribute to improved safety outcomes at work,” he says
“These grants will fund projects that will contribute to the reduction of work-related injuries, diseases and fatalities in South Australia — innovation is the key.
“The grants are about identifying and supporting research projects that match the objectives of the South Australian Strategic Plan, most notably regarding greater safety at work.”
Projects funded by the previous round of grants focused on:
- Eliminating construction-related harm at the design phase;
- OHS & W information for newly arrived migrants and refugees;
- Surveying safety attitudes of young workers to devise better safety information programmes for them;
- A resource tool to improve safety awareness in the agriculture and horticulture industry.
To be eligible for the grants, applicants must be based in South Australia and conduct the proposed work in this state.
Applications must meet specified criteria and successful applicants must submit regular progress reports and financial statements.
The call for applications is being advertised in metropolitan and regional newspapers, and the SafeWork SA website: www.safework.sa.gov.au. (Look for ‘OHSW Grants Programme’ in the drop-down menu under ‘OHS’)
The deadline for applications is 5pm, Friday 29 February 2008.
It is anticipated the successful applicants can begin their work in July 2008.
