The Top End’s transport minister seems keen on WiFi-connected buses, as more come online in March

Free wireless internet (WiFi) on public buses will be rolled-out further across the Northern Territory next month.
Transport Minister Adam Giles says five more free-WiFi connected buses will go into service across Darwin by late March in addition to the five WiFi-enabled buses already announced for the Top End.
Giles says WiFi is also being introduced on all Alice Springs public buses from next month and is already available at three Greater Darwin bus interchanges.
He says the improvements are being made to the public bus network at the same time that public bus fares in the Northern Territory remain comparably lower than other states. This includes for seniors and concession card holders.
“Wi-Fi is being extended on Darwin and Alice Springs routes to attract workers back onto the public transport system,” Giles says.
He says the initiative was about building a modern, convenient public transport system.
“The growing use of smart phones, iPads and Android tablets are an everyday reality for many Territorians and I am keen to enhance the services we provide with the public bus network,” says Giles.
“The initiative will allow passengers to read the news, catch-up on their emails or favourite social media sites when waiting at interchanges or travelling on buses and keep in contact with family and friends while travelling to-and-from school or work.
“WiFi-enabled buses and interchanges will help build a public bus network compatible with the demand for quick access to information.”
Giles says WiFi on public buses will promote the development of the Northern Territory as a technologically smart area.
“Mobile WiFi will allow commuters to use their time more profitably when riding on buses.”
