Red bus bound for Bondi

Stage 4 of Sydney's Metrobus network starts this month with room for 80,000 more passengers

July 6, 2010

Sydney’s busy Bondi Junction will be added to the Metrobus network from July 18, carrying up to 80,000 extra passengers a week.

The new service – Metrobus 40 – runs from Chatswood to Bondi and is the fourth route out of five planned for the network.

NSW Transport Minister John Robertson says more than 4.3 million passengers have been carried on the three existing Metrobus services, which started in October 2008.

“Metrobuses are high frequency services that run every ten minutes in peak periods, every 15 minutes during the off-peak and every 20 minutes on weeknights and weekends,” Robertson says.

“Each state-of-the-art bright red Metrobus is low-floor, air-conditioned and features the latest environmental controls to minimise greenhouse gas emissions.”

He says all Metrobus services require pre-purchased tickets before boarding – no tickets are sold on the bus.

“Pre-Pay helps speed up passenger boarding times and makes for a faster, more reliable bus trip,” Robertson says.

Metrobus services provide direct cross-city and cross-harbour links to a wide range of locations in and around Sydney.

After completion the network will provide 300,000 additional passenger spaces each week along Sydney’s major bus corridors.

The fifth Metrobus service from Drummoyne to Randwick is being planned, with details to be announced later this year.
