The Queensland Government is putting road traffic infringement revenue to good use after Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt announced the money will be used to construct safety barriers on the Gold Coast.
The Government is investing $11.47 million to 23 initiatives deemed high priority in an effort to reduce Queensland’s road toll.
Pitt says $1 million will be spent on installing safety barriers on the M1 between Logan River and Nerang.
The funding is part of the Government’s Safer Roads Sooner project which is being implemented across the State, costing $54 million in total.
Pitt says the 90 new Safer Roads Sooner projects, funded by $31 million in red light and speeding camera fines and an extra $23 million from the Queensland Government, were approved by the Safer Roads Sooner Advisory Committee.
“By committing almost $11.5 million in Safer Roads Sooner funding to the Gold Coast, the State Government is demonstrating its commitment to reducing Queensland’s road toll,” he says.
“Wire rope and other safety barriers to be installed at various sections along the M1 between the Logan River and Pappas Way in Nerang and will significantly reduce the risk of crashes involving vehicles crossing to the wrong side of the motorway.”
Pitt says locations with a serious crash history, or ones identified as having a potential problem, are prioritised for Safer Roads Sooner funding.
