The Queensland Government has warned commuters of a fare evasion crackdown.
Queensland Transport Minister Scott Emerson says security staff, police and transit officers will be conducting blitzes on the train network in coming weeks.
“They will be targeting fare evasion and any nuisance behaviour,” Emerson says.
He says anyone caught not paying the correct fare risks a $200 on the spot fine.
According to Queensland Government figures,
during the past three years more than 50,000 fines have been issued for fare evasion across south east Queensland.
Almost 2,000 commuters were fined at Roma Street, the top spot in Queensland for fines.
Park Road came in at second, with 1,677 fines issued, followed by Bowen Hills, Northgate, Fortitude Valley, Petrie, Altandi, Beenleigh, Strathpine, and Central Station.
Fare evasion is estimated to cost public transport users $25 million a year in lost revenue, according to government.
Emerson hasn’t revealed which areas enforcers will be targeting.
