In today’s business world it is increasingly important for organisations to continually review their operations and seek ways to improve them, that’s why the Queensland Government have set up a series of seminars designed to help business achieve operational improvement.
Taking advantage of the State Government’s free high performance workshops is a step in the right direction for smart Sunshine Coast business minds.
Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle says the Queensland Government’s Lean Manufacturing and Workforce Development series was a way in which the Government helped businesses become more successful.
“The workshops are intended for project and senior managers through to directors and CEOs, however, anyone wishing to improve organisational performance and profitability would benefit from attending,” Boyle says.
The Lean Manufacturing and Workplace Development Workshops Series consists of five two-hour workshops over a five-week period, starting on February 13.
‘Lean refers to the waste elimination activities that a business undertakes to deliver the best possible value to customers,” she says.
A lean business uses the minimum amount of manpower, materials, money and machines, to get the job done efficiently and achieve maximum customer satisfaction.
“The high performance workshop series enables businesses to switch on to the latest whole of business improvement systems so they can achieve excellence in manufacturing,” Boyle says.

A common misconception among businesses is that waste reduction practices are usually only needed in the factory during production.
The workshops focus on eliminating inefficient activities in all areas of an organisation, and this leads to increased work efficiency, staff involvement and customer satisfaction.
Craig Humphrey, Director of the Department’s Sunshine Coast Centre, says if your business is just getting off the ground, or you want to get ahead, the first workshop, Introduction to Lean Manufacturing will really develop your skill and knowledge base.
“Visual Workplace Management provides an introduction to mini business records, shows how a world-class organisation is structured and also explains how shop floor staff can help to achieve key business outcomes,” Humphrey says.
“In the third workshop, The 5S process in Lean Manufacturing, participants will be shown the principles of 5S housekeeping and its contribution to engaging people and work flow.
“Value stream mapping is equally important, as it involves a hands-on exercise, deals with business organisation and helps to identify blockages that hinder performance.”
Humphrey says the final workshop in the series would cover skills, technological change and labour productivity, as well as linking workforce development to lean manufacturing.
“Benefits of a holistic approach to high performance workplaces also explores the benefits to workers and provides an industry tour,” he says.
“At the end of the workshop series, participants will have new skills and knowledge to implement in their own businesses to improve performance and achieve greater success.”
All workshops will be conducted at: Lecture Theatre (Block A), Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE, Mooloolaba Campus, Lady Musgrave Drive, Mountain Creek.
