People are being encouraged to use alternative transport methods in Wellington this month
September 3, 2013
A three-week challenge to use alternative transport in the Wellington region starts next week.
The Spring to the Street transport challenge starts on September 9, and people are being encouraged to leave their car behind and embrace public transport, walking, cycling, and carpooling.
The challenge involves individuals or teams keeping track of every non-recreational trip they make and there are prizes for those who earn the most points.
Co-ordinator Claire Pascoe says it is a perfect opportunity to take to the streets and try different ways of getting around.
“If you’d like to try cycling to work, you could start by cycling to the shops which will earn you valuable points for the challenge.
“Or you could start taking the bus or train which gives you a bit of exercise walking to and from the bus stop or station and saves on parking.”
Wellington resident Ann Thomson says she always catches the bus to work since she has been unable to continue parking her car in the CBD.
“Once I switched to the routine of catching a bus instead of taking the car, it’s been easy to carry on.
“Catching the bus helps me to organise my time better, it’s great catching up with neighbours at the bus stop, and I can take time out on the bus as I don’t need to think about traffic.”
As part of the challenge, the first Open Street Sunday will be held on September 22 and will include music and food stalls.
The prizes for the challenge – including a Wairarapa wine tour and an overnight stay on Kapiti Island – will also be presented.
