Today marks the start of Australia’s first Federal inquiry into public Transport.
Australia’s public transport system will be put under the spotlight as the inquiry opens in Brisbane today.
Councils, state departments, industry groups, advocacy groups and cyclists are giving evidence at the Senate inquiry, which is examining the state of public transport across the country.
The inquiry, due to report in June, is looking into the benefits of more efficient public transport, the use of cars and bikes, and ways to improve the transport system, including new charges, subsidies and legislation.
It will also examine transport systems used overseas and how the best elements of these can be used in Australia.
The public hearing in Brisbane will take evidence from the Brisbane and Gold Coast city councils, the RACQ, as well as groups representing cyclists and pedestrians.
It will continue in Sydney on Friday and hold hearings in other capitals over the next month.
