Perth’s north needs plan

WA’s Transport Minister Troy Buswell has called for a CWG to solve Perth’s northern suburbs congestion problem

March 29, 2012

At the request of the Western Australian Government, a community working group will be formed to identify options to assist in the development of a transport solution to congestion problems in Perth’s northern suburbs.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell has appointed Ocean Reef MLA Albert Jacob chairman of the Mitchell Freeway Extension Community Working Group and Wanneroo MLA Paul Miles as deputy chairman.

Buswell anticipates the group will examine the extension of the Mitchell Freeway north of Burns Beach Road, in accordance with several planning studies already undertaken.

“The northern corridor region continues to undergo immense growth and is experiencing associated issues with travel times, road incidents and difficulty in accessing schools, shops and tertiary institutions as well as other areas of commercial and social interest,” Buswell says.

“The Government recognises we need to determine ideas that will be realistic for both a short-term and long-term road transport solution, and it’s important local residents and other stakeholders are engaged in this process.

“I’ve asked the Mitchell Freeway Extension Community Working Group to produce a strategic preliminary business case by the end of 2012 with recommendations for road transport solutions.

“We are calling on residents of the northern metropolitan corridor to nominate to be part of the working group, to represent the views of the community on key transport issues, so we can determine the most appropriate solution.”

The working group will include the mayor and chief executive officer from both the cities of Joondalup and Wanneroo. Nominations are open for members of the community to be part of the group.

Anyone interested in seeking information on the group can call WA Main Roads on 138 138.

Nominations close April 20, 2012.
