The Northern Territory government has announced that construction on a new look bus interchange in Palmerston will be completed this month.
NT company Norbuilt was awarded the $2 million contract to deliver a roof extension alongside new facilities that cater for increased commuters and new school bus routes that service Palmerston and beyond.
The NT government says the new roof will provide greater weather protection, with two new structures to be built for commuters to enjoy a safe, cool and dry environment while waiting for the bus.
Extra shaded seating, lighting, CCTV and a new accessible toilet facility will also be installed upon completion.
The upgraded bus interchange comes alongside upgrades to two key intersections in Palmerston that have seen an increase in traffic and accidents over the past few years.
The Emery Avenue and Chung Wah Terrance intersection is being upgraded by local company BMD Construction, while a dedicated right hand turn at Lambrick Avenue and Hutchinson Terrance is being installed by Allan King and Sons.
The NT government says all three projects have invested $7.5 million back into Palmerston and has supported more than 126 local jobs.
“Palmerston is the second largest and fastest growing city in the Northern Territory, and for good reason,” Northern Territory chief minister Eva Lawler says.
“We are investing in our community assets right across Palmerston, and the community members I represent have asked for these upgrades, which I am delivering.”
