Office of Transport Safety Investigations (OTSI) shares safety lessons

OTSI says it will teach the industry some safety lessons at this year's Expo

At this year’s Expo, the Office of Transport Safety Investigations (OTSI) will be showcasing its safety investigation outcomes, detailing the investigation process and presenting findings from its unique standpoint in the industry.

“We investigate individual safety incidents involving buses and coaches, and we also carry out ‘systemic’ investigations where our data analysis identifies safety risks affecting the industry as a whole,” OTSI CEO and Chief Investigator Dr Natalie Pelham told ABC.

OTSI is an independent NSW government agency. Since 2004, it has completed more than 90 bus safety investigations and engaged with hundreds of stakeholders to share safety insights derived from its work. OTSI’s investigations in progress include incidents involving bus fires and a pedestrian fatality, and a systemic look at bus rollaways involving multiple operators.

Pelham says OTSI will inform members of the industry on its ‘no-blame approach’ to tackling bus and coach safety issues and will present its insights to prevent the same dangerous scenarios from happening again.

“We play a key role in informing industry about how they can improve safety and meet their obligations,” Pelham says.

The Expo will be an ideal time for people to learn more about OTSI’s role and how its work can support operators, manufacturers and others to improve bus and coach safety.

“Our focus at the Expo will be on sharing information and listening to what industry has to say,” Pelham says. “Visitors to our stand can talk with our investigators about what an OTSI investigation involves, the trends we’re seeing in bus and coach safety occurrences, and the insights we’ve gained.”
