The Tasmanian government has announced it is progressing on its plans to develop a new park and ride facility in Launceston.
Tasmanian transport, business, industry and resources minister Eric Abetz says two preferred sites have now been identified for the park and ride area.
Following assessments, the locations in Mowbray and Prospect have been agreed for further investigation by both the state government and the City of Launceston.
The transport minister says park and ride facilities have been shown to increase public transport usage, providing commuters with a popular alternative to driving.
“I’m pleased to announce the first site for investigation will be on Invermay Road in Mowbray which has a high level of public transport frequency,” he says.
“The second will be in Prospect, on the Westbury Road corridor which is an important bus corridor for this growing community.

“Work is now underway on concept designs for the two sites and if the locations work as required, a decision on whether to proceed will be made in consultation with council.”
Once further discussion with council on concept designs occur, the state government says it will provide more details on the site locations.
Abetz says a consultant has been engaged to develop park and ride feasibility studies for four other corridors across Launceston, with this work guiding the identification and selection of sites for possible future park and ride locations in the region.
“All sites are being considered against a base framework which includes location, potential patronage levels, a site’s fitness for a park and ride, value for money including any land acquisition costs and proximity to the CBD and existing public transport services,” he says.
“Should current planning return favourable results we would reasonably expect to see construction start on the first site in 2026.
“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re continuing to work hard to ensure Tasmanians have the services and infrastructure that they deserve.”
