Western Australia’s public transport network is set for a major boost with the introduction of new and amended bus services to support the soon-to-open METRONET Byford Station.

Community consultation is now underway on the proposed changes, which aim to improve connectivity and increase service coverage across Byford and surrounding suburbs.

The proposed network overhaul will deliver seven new and modified bus routes, 10 additional buses, and a significant uplift in service frequency and operating hours. Once implemented, the revised network will add an extra 445,000 kilometres of bus services annually.

The changes are designed to better connect residents of Byford, Whitby, Mundijong, and the growing suburb of Hilbert to the new Byford Station and beyond.

Transport minister Rita Saffioti says the enhanced bus network would be key to the success of the new train station and future-proofing public transport in Perth’s southeast.

“The new train station in Byford is going be a game changer for the community, and the enhanced bus network will be critical to connecting people to our world-class rail network,” Saffioti says.

“Not only will the changes support connectivity to the new station, but they will also see new services in growing suburbs for the first time.

“It is important the community take their time to review and provide their feedback on these changes to ensure the bus network best aligns with community needs.”

Highlights of the proposed changes include:

  • Seven new and modified bus routes operating at Byford Station;

  • Improved peak, off-peak and weekend frequencies;

  • A wider span of operating hours in Byford, Whitby and Mundijong;

  • A brand-new route serving newly developed residential areas in Hilbert;

  • Fully integrated services connecting seamlessly to train services at Byford.

Darling Range MLA Hugh Jones also encouraged residents to take part in the consultation process.

“The new Byford train station will transform our community, and I can’t wait to see it open for services later this year,” he says.

“I encourage everyone to take this opportunity and get involved in the consultation process by reviewing the proposed changes and providing your feedback on the new bus network.”

Oakford MLA Yaz Mubarakai says that METRONET continues to deliver transformative benefits across Perth’s southeast.

“We’ve seen right across the south-east of Perth the transformative impact of METRONET, and now communities in and around Byford will see the same positive benefits,” Mubarakai says.

“The consultation is an important opportunity for people to review the proposed enhancements to the bus network, and I encourage people to take the time to provide feedback.”

The consultation is open until 16 June 2025, with community members invited to submit feedback online at www.mysaytransport.wa.gov.au.

Final routes and timetables for both train and bus services will be released ahead of the Armadale Line’s reopening later this year.
