Following concerns from local school representatives, The Lismore School Bus Interchange will be receiving 10 replacement bus shelters to improve safety and coverage.
Planned for installation in late July, the new shelters will include more than half a metre of additional overhead awning and the shelter walls will be made of perforated aluminium, increasing visibility and improving safety.
Reports were made by local operators and school representatives about a potential safety risk with the current shelters, citing that the shelters provided inadequate coverage for students, especially during wet weather.
“Lismore students deserve to have a safe and dry place to wait for their school buses at the end of their school day,” member for Lismore Janelle Saffin says.
“I’ve been advocating for improved safety measures and amenities at the interchange for five years.
“Local parents will also be grateful their children’s safety is being improved by the new design and ongoing investigations into CCTV.”
Transport for NSW and Council will continue discussions regarding the need for any additional shelters and investigations into further safety improvements including extension of Council’s existing CCTV network.
“This is a great outcome for students who use this busy interchange,” Lismore City mayor Steve Krieg says.
“Not only will the new shelters provide better protection when it rains, it also improves safety as students wait for their buses.”
The NSW Government is funding the full $303,000 project cost, with all works to be completed outside of the interchange operating times to avoid any impacts on students or school bus services.
