Kinetic has been awarded the Industry Leader award in the Future Energy category at yesterday’s Victorian Premier Sustainability Awards 2023.
Sustainability Victoria says the zero-emissions bus depot built by Kinetic aims to deliver a cleaner, greener bus network for Victorians.
Kinetic has made this happen by upgrading its electrical infrastructure at its Sunshine West and Heatherton depots to house and charge a new fleet of 36 battery electric buses (BEB), the largest BEB fleet of any Victorian bus operator.
Upgrades at these facilities include new undercover bays to provide weather protection and charging infrastructure for these buses.
More than 300 solar panels have also been installed to reduce the depot’s carbon footprint and have sufficient electricity to power the buses to be 100 per cent green via a carbon-offset program.
Sustainability Victoria says the initiative supports the Victorian government’s target to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
Kinetic co-CEO and director Michael Sewards says in a LinkedIn post that he’s proud of the team for winning this award.
“This award is recognition of an enormous team effort in delivering on time the transformation to zero-emissions buses in our Sunshine and Heatherton depots,” Sewards says.
“Thanks to our Board for their support and our banking partners for their commitment to helping us deliver on our net zero targets.”
Kinetic executive general manager Graham Smith says he’s pleased for Kinetic’s Melbourne team for winning this award.
“So many people have worked tirelessly on these projects, which will now introduce 39 BEBs into the Melbourne network,” Smith says.
“Well done to our service delivery and workshop teams before, during and after the major infrastructure works. They took it all in their stride and have all been vital to the success of the rollout.”
