International students get 35 percent fare discount

Reports of crimes against international students have prompted plans for discounted public transport fares in NSW

October 30, 2012

Reports of crimes against international students have prompted plans
to give them
discounted public transport fares in New South Wales.

From next year international students will receive a discount on tickets for buses, trains, light rail and ferries in Sydney, the Hunter and the Illawarra, following the release of the International Education Taskforce’s a ten-year strategy.

The State Government’s taskforce says a number of high-profile crimes against international students in 2009 combined with the global financial crisis, and high Australian dollar have tarnished the state’s reputation for international students.

The students will receive discounts on public transport of as much as 35 per cent of the usual price.

The move comes despite recent research by the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC ) that concluded, overall, international students are less likely or as likely to be victims of physical assault and other theft’
compared to
other citizens.

The report does, however,
acknowledge higher risk for particular student groups, such as Indian students.
