UK operator lets drivers beat heat

First Bus is allowing drivers to relax their uniform policy to remain comfortable while operating through the UK heatwave

The UK’s second largest regional bus operator First Bus is relaxing its uniform policy for drivers to allow them to feel more comfortable as the UK suffers through a heatwave.

As warm conditions continue to bear down on the UK, First Bus drivers can no dress down while the temperature nudges 40 degrees Celsius.

First Bus says it has made the move to ensure drivers remain comfortable and cool enough to work in bus cabs and keep the area’s public transport network mobile.

The rules were relaxed from Sunday July 17 until Tuesday July 19 when the worst of the weather swept over the UK.

Currently, only the West of England First Bus has gone public with the decision, with reports swirling around whether the rest of First Bus has replicated the move.

In a tweet issued by First Bus West of England, it decided to change the dress code of drivers to match the current climate.

“Due to the amber weather warning alert between Sunday and Tuesday, we have relaxed our driver uniform standards to allow them to be more comfortable during the hot weather,” First Bus says.

“If you’re travelling please ensure you carry water with you during these hot days.”

The move comes after UK minister Kit Malthouse warned public transport services may be severely disrupted during the heatwave, as the amber weather warning is in place for extreme heat.
