Transdev renews key WA contracts

Transdev will continue operating its famous Transperth bus service under a landmark new contract that solidifies driver job security

The Western Australian government has announced Transdev as the successful recipient of a tender to continue operating its Transperth Fremantle and Rockingham-Mandurah bus services.

The public transport operator has run the services since 1996, with the new $1.3 billion contracts coming into effect from October 2 this year.

The 10-year contracts will ensure more permanent, full-time employment is made available to bus drivers.

The news follows Transdev’s recent wins of Transdev John Holland NSW Region Nine bus contract incorporating Sydney’s CBD to the eastern beaches, Brisbane’s eastern suburban bus contract extension and the successful New Zealand launch of the Airport Express in Wellington.

Transdev Australasia chief executive Luke Agati says the 10-year renewal was recognition of the continued great work of the local WA team and serves as further evidence of Transdev’s expertise in bus operations across Australasia.

“This is great news for us and I’m proud of our team’s partnership with Transperth and service to the local community,” Agati says.

“Transdev brings global innovation and experience in zero emission bus operations with local know-how to all our Australian and New Zealand operations.”

Transdev WA managing director Bob Parton says he’s proud of his local team of 800 people who run more than 400 buses.

“Our team do their best every day to serve the Fremantle and Rockingham-Mandurah communities,” Parton says.

“As a major employer, I want to thank all our people and this news gives them, their families and their communities long-term certainty.”

WA transport minister Rita Saffioti says the government will continue to work with Transdev to treat bus drivers with respect and continue the high-quality Transperth bus service.

“These contracts mark the beginning of a new era of improved job security and permanency arrangements for Transperth bus drivers in the Fremantle and Rockingham-Mandurah areas,” Saffioti says.

“Following consultation between the state government and the Transport Workers Union (TWU), new requirements for the provision of more permanent full-time employment opportunities and consultative management arrangements were developed for this tender round.”
