The new Curtin Central bus station can accommodate up to 80 bus services.

The AUD$15 million project - with contributions from Curtin and the Public Transport Authority (PTA) - will be open from Sunday, February 17, 2019, adding to the existing station on Hayman Road.

The project was funded with a $10 million contribution from Curtin University and $5 million from the Public Transport Authority, to create a regional hub to improve connectivity for the community, the government states.

At full capacity, Curtin Central Bus Station will accommodate up to 80 bus services during peak times, servicing the growing public transport needs of the nearby community, including Curtin University's Bentley campus, over the coming decades, it’s claimed.

About one million public transport users pass through the existing Curtin University Bus Station on Hayman Road every year, with numbers expected to grow to four million by 2035.

WHAT’S IT GOT?

The new bus station includes 12 bus stands (two of which are able to accommodate longer, articulated buses), six layover stands, staff and passenger facilities including toilets and CCTV, and digital passenger information displays.

Initially 944 scheduled trips will be operating in and out of Curtin Central Bus Station on a typical weekday, in addition to the existing services from the Hayman Road facility.

From February 17, routes 30, 33, 34, 101, 284 and 960 will depart from Curtin Central Bus Station.

Curtin Central Bus Station will be complemented by recreational facilities, retail outlets and public spaces to create an integrated transit oriented development hub.

BETTER STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said, "As a Curtin University graduate, I am very pleased to announce the upcoming opening of the new Curtin Central Bus Station - an exciting addition to the Bentley campus.

"University students are very reliant on public transport, so any improvements to make it an easier and more efficient way to get around is a welcome addition.

"The bus station forms the first part of what will be an amazing space to unwind, catch up with friends and connect to public transport. I look forward to seeing the area around the new station develop into an exciting new precinct."

Curtin University vice-chancellor, Professor Deborah Terry said, "The Curtin Central Bus Station will offer an improved public transport experience for students, staff and the public, as well as broader lifestyle benefits for the whole community."

"The project plays an integral role in improving sustainable transport options and accessibility to our Bentley Campus for all public transport users, integrating the university's public spaces with transport zones.

"Commuters will enjoy a centrally located hub in what will soon be a vibrant innovation precinct featuring accommodation, retail and leisure options. The university will also seek to leverage the infrastructure for potential research opportunities with industry."
