IRIZAR INVESTS 75 MILLION EUROS INTO EUROPES FIRST E-MOBILITY PLANT IN SPAIN

A NEW ELECTRIC commercial vehicle-manufacturing facility covering 18,000sqm and with a claimed initial capacity to make 1000 electric vehicles per year has opened in Aduna, Spain, recently according to Irizar.

Touted as ‘Europe’s first e-mobility plant’, here Irizar will build electric buses and other commercial vehicles – including their main components and systems – for use in urban scenarios, with the plant currently churning out one electric bus every two days, it’s claimed. Production is set to double from September 2018 due to full order books, says Irizar.

Focused on sustainability, it is ‘A-class rated’ in energy efficiency – currently the highest in Europe – using excess steam from another factory in the area for hot water heating, for example.

Currently, it employs 150 workers but the aim is to create 300 to 500 jobs within the next five years; the average age of the technicians set to transform large-scale mobility is 26. Production vehicle testing is done on the premises on dedicated test benches and track facilities.

In addition to electric buses and components, Irizar also wants to build other electric commercial vehicles to “complement the electromobility needs of cities” such as Madrid, which utilises Spanish-made electric buses.

Irizar has also recently entered into cooperation with a company called Ferrostaal to sell and deliver electric vehicles across the DACH region [(Deutsch (German), A — Austria (Österreich), CH – Switzerland (Schweiz), plus several countries that speak German with members active in the German Scratch community].

The new plant produces 10.8m and 12m-long city buses – which have been operating in various European cities since 2014 – 18m-long articulated buses, and will soon produce bi-articulated buses (or ‘mega artics’).

Irizar’s e-mobility vehicle range currently includes the Irizar ie-bus, ie-tram and ie-truck.
