Fare review possible

Greater Wellington Regional Council is in favour of an initiative to review fares and ticketing

Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) has voted in support of a resolution to review fare and ticketing components of the transport system.

Wellington mayoral candidate Justin Lester and regional council candidate Daran Ponter have taken the first step in delivering their campaign pledge of cheaper public transport for residents.

GWRC voted in support of Ponter’s resolution to review the fare and ticketing components of the Wellington Regional Transport Plan as part of the 2017/18 annual plan process.

This review will include fare concessions, application of off-peak fares and getting ready for integrated ticketing – among other initiatives.

“Cheaper public transport fares are on the way. Today’s decision opens up the implementation of student discount fares, a fare freeze, fare transfers and integrated ticketing in next year’s GWRC Annual Plan,” says Lester.

“This is the first step in delivering our campaign pledge for cheaper public transport for Wellingtonians.

“Wellington needs a mayor that can work with the regional council to deliver cheaper public transport. Cooperation between local and regional council will be the key to better public transport for Wellington.”

Ponter says the support for the fare and ticketing review shows by working cooperatively across local and regional council, things can get done.

“Today’s unanimous support shows we can build support for good ideas like cheaper transport across both local and regional government,” he says.
