Construction starts

Work has begun in Victoria to upgrade level crossings, affecting some public transport services

Construction is now underway at the Furlong Road level crossing – one of 50 that will be removed by the Victoria Government.

Minister for public transport Jacinta Allan and minister for roads and road safety Luke Donnellan visited the to mark the start of works and outline a massive program of works that will be carried out across Victoria’s train, tram and road network this summer.

Work will ramp up at eight level crossings this summer, affecting train services on the Frankston, Sunbury, Glen Waverley, Belgrave, Lilydale and Bendigo lines at various times in January, as well as nearby roads.

Maintenance works will also affect services on the Glen Waverley, Belgrave and Lilydale lines, and coaches will replace trains on the Albury line in late December for track upgrade works.

“Works to build a better train, tram and road network will ramp up over summer,” says Allen.

“It will cause disruption, but it’s worth it for the benefits it will bring, making it easier to get to work, school and home again safer and sooner.”

Buses will replace some trams during this period, diverting around work zone
