A documentary on the history of Deluxe Coachlines has been produced by a passionate historian and filmmaker.

The documentary traces the development of the coach operator from 1979 to its demise in 1990, and how it grew to dominate the Australian long-haul coach market in the 1980s.

Viewmark Films Australia director and documentary producer Gordon Lowe says it took a while to gather all the historical details and footage, but was a labour of love.

"It is a story of one second hand bus lurching its way across, the Nullarbor to a fleet of coaches traversing the nation," he says.

"It is the story of the little Aussie battler that took on the big boys of the bus industry and won.

"It is also the story of the company’s founders, Roden and McIntyre, of cut price fares and the introduction of the revolutionary super-decker bus.

"Deluxe Coachlines was a phenomenon of the 1980s."

The documentary will be ready by the end of this month, in time for the 25th anniversary of the date the organisation went bust on August 28, 1990.
