Free ANZAC Day buses

Free buses for all wanting to attend the dawn services in Melbourne and Perth

Free bus services to dawn services will operate in Melbourne and Perth on ANZAC Day.

The free early morning shuttle buses will operate from a number of RSL locations in Melbourne and take passengers to the Shrine of Remembrance in time for the Dawn Service, which starts at 6am on Saturday, April 25.

Victorian minister for public transport Jacinta Allan says everything possible has been done to help make it easy for people to get to and from the Dawn Service.

“This year marks 100 years since ANZAC forces landed at Gallipoli and we expect record crowds to attend the Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance,” she says.

“Public transport will start before 4am and free shuttle buses will run from RSL Clubs to get people into the city before the service starts.”

“In addition to the Dawn Service, the ANZAC Day footy at the MCG is always a big occasion and there will be extra services to get people there and home again after the match.”

Veterans and War Widows can travel for free on Victoria’s public transport network on April 24, 25 and 26 and free travel is also extended to Australian Defence Force members, Scouts, Guides and school students on ANZAC Day.

Also, those not eligible for free travel will pay the reduced public holiday rate of $6 on their myki for all-day travel within Zones 1 and 2.

Canberra will also have free bus services running on Anzac Day, but can only provide a reduced service on Monday, April 27 – as this is counted as a public holiday for drivers there.

Perth and the city of Rockhampton in Central Queensland will also have free buses on the day.

Bus travel is free in in Sydney only to ANZAC Day participants wearing their uniform, displaying their medals or in the possession of an official letter from their local RSL, or the children, grandchildren, spouses and widows of veterans who carry a war widows gold card – this same rule applies to Brisbane residents.

People attending ANZAC Day events in Melbourne are strongly advised to plan ahead and can call 1800 800 007 for information about public transport scheduled on ANZAC Day.

Those wanting to book their seat from their local Melbourne RSL to the Shrine of Remembrance need to book their seats by registering their details at the website www.ptv.vic.gov.au or by calling 1800 800 007.
