Bus for Cairns Airport

A new bus connection from Cairns city centre to the airport has been established

People travelling to and from Cairns are now able to catch a bus to and from the airport.

The Airport Connect service had its first run on March 25 and offers a free shuttle service between the airport and Sheridan Street, where passengers can connect with other public transport.

Cairns Airport chief executive officer Kevin Brown says the idea had been developed through regular meetings of a transport forum comprising Cairns Airport, Cairns Regional Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR).

"This forum has looked at many aspects relating to the airport’s transport and road network," he says.

"Airport Connect will give people coming into or out of Cairns Airport another transport option.

"It will be incorporated into the existing airport shuttle service operated by Sun Palm Transport.

"Passengers can choose to take only the free service as far as the links with the existing public transport system or purchase the full Sun Palm service to the city or northern beaches."

The trial will operate for a three month period, with an initial review planned at the two month mark and a further review once the three month period is reached.

The service will operate regularly every day between 4.15am until after the last flight for the day.

Brown says the success of the service will be evident through the uptake.

"If it proves popular we will work with the DTMR to ensure it can continue as a very cost effective solution to linking the airport with public transport," Brown says.

Other initiatives include painting the roadside lines yellow to stand out more and reinforce that the shoulder is a no standing area and putting road signage in place to remind all road users that Airport Avenue is a shared road.

Cairns mayor Bob Manning says safety is the priority and welcomed the shuttle bus service.

"This service will fill a gap in our transport network, providing a safe and affordable option for people travelling to and from the airport," he says.

"During the trial, we will be monitoring the success of the service while we continue to work with Cairns Airport and DTMR on other options to improve safety for all road users."
