Bus passengers Adelaide Hills are experiencing an exciting new way of reaching their destination as Adelaide Metro’s latest double decker bus takes to the road from this week.

Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan says the busy Hills T840 was chosen for Adelaide’s second double decker bus in the fleet to provide extra seats for the highly patronised route.

"At the recent Country Cabinet in the Adelaide Hills it was clear to the [State] Government that increased public transport capacity for the expanding town of Mt Barker is a priority for local residents, and we have listened to those concerns," he says.

Double Decker buses can seat 85 passengers – almost 20 more than the longer articulated buses which are commonly used on the route between Mt Barker and the city.

And measuring the same length as a conventional bus, it helps reduce congestion on the busy South Eastern Freeway.

"This double-decker bus is a new addition from the State Government to the Adelaide Metro fleet to increase capacity on popular services and help meet demand," Mullighan says.

"The fully air-conditioned bus provides far greater capacity than other buses and has two designated wheelchair spaces on-board."

The State Government also recently expanded the Dumas Street Park‘n’Ride in Mt Barker, increasing parking spaces from 180 to nearly 600 to meet the demands of public transport passengers.

"The expansion of the facility has helped to accommodate an increase in the number of bus services between Adelaide and Mount Barker since it opened to the public," says Mullighan.

The T840 hills route travels from Mount Barker to city via the South Eastern Freeway and is a limited stop service which operates Monday to Friday.

The Hills double decker is the second in the fleet after the JetExpress service from the Adelaide Airport to almost 30 city hotels began operating in October.
