New flexible fares and reusable electronic tap and ride cards on the Darwin and Alice Springs bus network will be introduced this week.

Minister for Transport Peter Styles says this new ticketing system will give territorians the opportunity to save money and will allow for better planning of public transport services.

"The reusable tap and ride cards, are a faster and more convenient way of paying for your travel and regular commuters and concession card holders may find that they pay less than before," he says,

The tap and ride card is a plastic card with a computer chip that stores bus fare values or credits.

Styles says improvements to the Darwin Bus network have been an essential priority for him as Minister for Transport and the ticketing system is not the only advancement underway before Christmas for Territorians.

"To compliment the ticketing system the Department of Transport have also created the NT Bus Tracker app to help travellers plan their journey," he says.

"You can locate the closest bus to you in real time, save the stops and routes you use regularly and search for the next available bus on its way to your current location."

For those who want a one off bus ride, paper tickets will be issued so you do not require a tap and ride card.

The tap and ride ticketing system will take effect from this week.
