PTV prevents online fraud

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) is undertaking measures to reduce online fraud with myki cards

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) is taking steps to reduce the risk of online credit card fraud by introducing new fraud detection measures.

PTV has recently been the victim of cybercrime targeting online transactions associated with myki.

PTV Director of Customer Services Alan Fedda says the scheme is not targeting PTV customer details.

"I want to be very clear that every step is taken to protect the system against activity such as this and customers who use our online top up service can rest assured their credit card information has not been accessed and they should continue to top up online as normal," he says.

"The myki website offers customers enhanced protection as PTV has implemented the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard which means that we do not store credit card details input into the myki website.

"This scheme is largely targeting international credit cards which are used to make purchases through the myki website. "
Fedda says the fraudulent activity has been reported to Victoria Police and we are also working closely with financial institutions to reduce the fraudulent activity.

PTV has also introduced new, stronger fraud detection measures to safeguard against online criminal activity.

"These new measures are already having a positive impact in detecting and preventing fraud," he says.

"Since we implemented these enhancements, the value of fraudulently-processed transactions has decreased by more than 70 per cent.

"The myki system has collected more than $2 billion dollars in fares since it started, and the fraudulently processed transactions represent just 0.1 per cent of the farebox collected."

Payment fraud figures for 2013 show that Australian card fraud is increasing as part of a global trend, but that detection and prevention measures employed by the industry are showing promising results in keeping fraud levels down.

Fedda said like most Australia businesses, online systems – including myki - can be the subject of fraudulent activity but PTV was committed to implementing the tightest security measures.
