Unexpected surprise

Phillip Baker was surprised to receive the BusNSW 2014 Annual Achiever Award

Loyal, honest, and ethical are all words which were used to describe the winner of this year’s BusNSW 2014 Annual Achiever Award.

Phillip Baker, of Hopkinson’s Transport, was surprised to receive the award, after gaining years of experience in the industry.

The award is sponsored by ABC Underwriting and was presented by Thea Hillier at the BusNSW Member Conference 2014.

About 250 people attended the conference at Crowne Plaza, Hunter Valley, on April 16.

Hillier says: “With extensive industry knowledge, complementary management style and vision, this year’s award recognises successful succession planning for future generations and the commitment and mentorship which has helped shape an established company, continuing to encourage prosperity and evolution.”

Baker was born into the bus industry, starting in a family owned and run bus company.

Over the years, he worked successfully with a range of bus companies in various management roles, with an emphasis on rationalisation of bus routes, preparing timetables to achieve transport requirements and better bus services for the community.

He has recently added to his list of achievements and qualification with the completion of the Certificate IV in Transport & Logistics.

“He is a quite achiever, loyal, a person whose skills and ability to analyse situations in the calmest manner but also in a management style acting on informed decisions,” says Hillier.

“A determined worker who has an unparalleled work ethic, he is the quintessential gentlemen; honest, generous and reliable.

“He has been a mentor to many an aspiring manager and driver, also an active supporter of the industry.”

Baker was surprised to receive the award and says it was an unexpected honour.

“I do thank the industry for this presentation,” he says.

“I’m really surprised, I didn’t expect it.”

He will receive flights, registration and accommodation to the annual Bus Industry Confederation conference in the Gold Coast in September – courtesy of ABC Underwriting – as part of the award.
