Public transport review in Northern Territory attracting positive feedback

A review into options to improve Darwin’s public transport system has started off positively.

The review was launched earlier this year and the initial feedback has been positive, according to Northern Territory Minister for Transport Peter Styles.

“We want to make public transport an attractive safe and reliable alternative to car travel for the community,” he says.

“Our government has a strategic focus to improve our public transport with an emphasis on improving accessibility and supporting our growing economy and society.”

A draft revised network structure is being designed to improve the usefulness of the system by reducing existing complexity, improving connections, integrating with land use planning and improving service frequency.

The next steps in the Darwin Public Transport Network Review will include a draft network recommendation report to be provided to State Government for consideration by mid-year and a revision of the Draft Network Report in the latter half of 2014 including wider consultation to further develop options.

The review aims to achieve government’s commitment to improve the public transport network and forms a key component in the development of a Public Transport Strategy for the Territory.

“Darwin’s public transport network has not been properly reviewed for many years and this is a high priority,” Styles says.

“There are more than 5.2 million passenger trips per year on the greater Darwin public transport network and we want to be able to continue to offer the most efficient, cost effective mode of traveling.

“This review is part of our government’s plan to provide safe, reliable and comfortable public transport and we want to continue to provide this to our community.”
