A Queensland bus company is embracing International Bus Driver Appreciation day this month and encouraging passengers to say thanks to their drivers.

The celebration day will be on March 18, and passengers of bus services across the globe are encouraged to take a moment and thank their driver for their dedication and hard work.

The little known ‘holiday’ has fast spread from its origins in the US after a group of passengers decided their bus driver need a little more recognition.

Rockhampton-based Young’s Bus Service driver Erica Burns says the day is a great idea for both passengers and drivers alike.

"It’s nice to get recognition from your passengers it lets you know you’re appreciated," she says.

Burns has been driving a bus for 35 years and believes that one of the most rewarding aspects of the job is helping passengers.

"Whether it’s helping a customer get to where they want to go or teaching the school kids something new, it makes the job worthwhile.

"I like the interaction with my passengers and I have met a lot of nice people over the years."

International bus driver appreciation day is about recognising the work of a bus driver, which is not always easy.

"Sometimes situations get a bit hairy, once I was working late in Adelaide and was almost robbed," she says.

"I was asked how much money I had, to which I replied, not enough to go to jail over. Thankfully nothing happened but it was a little scary."

While it’s not always easy, Burns has never considered doing anything else.

"The vast majority of passengers were pleasant and well mannered.

"At the end of the day the best thing a customer can do for me is be polite and friendly but having the correct change also helps."

Celebrating International bus driver appreciation day is easy - just throw a smile, wave to your driver and let them know you value their work.

Young’s Bus Service would like to invite anyone wanting to thank any of their drivers to do so via a comment on their Facebook page.
