Better real-time

Victorian bus users will have access to improved real-time information by mid year

Melbourne buses users will have access to better real-time information after Public Transport Victoria (PTV) announced Smartrak as the preferred supplier to operate the bus tracking system (BTS) on metropolitan buses.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Wild says the award of the contract is another step forward in providing better and real-time information, as well as improved bus services for our customers.

"Smartrak has a proven track record in providing accurate and reliable real-time public transport solutions to help organisations like PTV increase the performance of passenger information systems, which is fantastic news for PTV’s customers," he says.

"In the future, we’ll be able to provide real-time bus tracking information to customers through smartphone apps, online and PTV’s customer contact centre."

Wild says providing real-time information to customers means they will be able to find out when their bus is due to arrive at their stop, so they know when to be there.

"With accurate, detailed and timely service information available shortly, this will lead to improved coordination at transport interchanges… as well as helping to support decision making for bus service improvements."

The new bus tracking system will be rolled out to all bus depots by the end of the 2014 financial year, with customer benefits progressively implemented once the system roll-out is completed.

Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder says the State Government is delivering on its commitment to provide open access to government data.

"With upgrades like the bus tracking system, Melburnians can expect to see a significant improvement in the delivery of bus services and customer information, with data from the system being able to be used to create innovative and useful apps that help people get around our public transport network."

Smartrak will operate the bus tracking system for five years, with an option to extend its term for up to five years.
