Likely stadium contractor named

An engineering company is likely to undertake major road works as part of the Perth Stadium

Lend Lease Engineering have been named as the preferred industry bidder to undertake major road works around the new Perth Stadium as part of the bus-train-road-pedestrian stadium transport plan.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell says the works – on and around Victoria Park Drive – are a crucial part of the plan.

Final contract details will be negotiated with Lend Lease, and if successful, a contract will be awarded next month.

“Three detailed bids were received and assessed and Lend Lease was identified as the preferred contractor,” Buswell says.

“This project will expand the existing road and bridge network to enable the new railway lines to be installed on the Armadale line for the new six-platform Stadium Station to be built at the old Belmont Park Station site.”

The successful bidder will add bridge spans to the rail bridge adjacent to the Graham Farmer Freeway (GFF), resurface a 600m section of Victoria Park Drive, alter the existing footbridge over GFF and build a new pedestrian underpass under Victoria Park Drive linking the new Stadium Station with the new Perth Stadium and Sports Precinct.

“While the work will disrupt traffic flows on Victoria Park Drive at times, particularly around the bridge works, everything will be done to maintain traffic movements for all road users,” says Buswell.

“The completed road and bridge works are part of the wider transport plan that will transfer about 50,000 people from the stadium precinct within an hour of the completion of an event.”

In December, three short-listed consortia submitted their responses to design, build, partially finance and maintain the new Perth Stadium and Sports Precinct.

Each response is now undergoing rigorous review and evaluation and he successful consortium will be announced in mid-2014.

Construction of the Victoria Park works will start in May and is expected to be complete by June 2015.
