Statistics show opportunity to increase public transport usage exists in Australia
More than half of all Australians say they don’t use public transport to commute to work due to a lack of services suited to their needs.
A social analysis released this month (FEBRUARY) shows 54 per cent of commuters state they don’t use public transport as there is no service or a suitably timed service available to them.
The figures by social research agency McCrindle Research also shows only three commuting methods have decreased in recent years – being a car passenger, walking and motorcycle or scooter.
Social Researcher Mark McCrindle says they found commuters around the country face many impediments when deciding whether or not to use public transport.
“They say it’s the lack of availability of that public transport or lack of available time and access for them,” he says.
“It does seem that Australians are willing to use public transport… but they just don’t have the reasonable options.
“I think it does create an opportunity for government and public transport providers to make sure public transport is there.”
The analysis also shows one in ten train commuters also need to use private vehicles on their commute compared to one in five bus users.
McCrindle says this shows buses are a more complete solution for commuters.
“Buses are, in that sense, a good option.”
