One-stop shop for bus

A Toowoomba bus interchange is set for a facelift to become a central PT hub

A one-stop shop for public transport in Toowoomba, QLD, will soon be a reality after work on the Neil Street bus interchange starts next month.

Toowoomba Regional Council Infrastructure Committee Chair Councillor Carol Taylor says the refurbishment will include provision for both long-distance and local bus services.

"The interchange, which will be renamed the Toowoomba Bus Station, will be a one-stop shop for all bus services in Toowoomba," she says.

"The refurbishment will make the facility even more attractive to bus operators and passengers.

TransLink spokesperson Kirby Orr says the interchange means all of the city's bus services, no matter where they're coming from or going to, will arrive and depart from the one place.

"Bus passengers will be able to seamlessly transfer between services, rather than having to walk along Neil Street to other bus terminals," she says.

"This will make it much easier to leave the car at home and get on board public transport."

Greyhound Australia coaches will also relocate to the bus station for its long-distance services to major destinations including Brisbane, Mt Isa, Darwin and Melbourne.

"Greyhound Australia is also building a new shopfront, including a waiting lounge area, on the Bell Street Mall - adjacent to the bus station - which will be open for all bus customers," says Orr.

The refurbishment includes new civil works to accommodate bus bays, new bus seating, bins and handrails and a refurbished disabled toilet.

Work is due to start in February and be completed by mid-April this year, and temporary signage will be at the interchange to re-direct patrons to the temporary bus stops.

The project is jointly funded by Toowoomba Regional Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads' TransLink Division.

The council apologises in advance for any temporary inconvenience to businesses.
