VIC fare rise

Public transport fares in Victoria will rise next year in line with CPI plus 2.5 per cent to 2018

Public transport fares will increase in Victoria next month as the government makes an effort to keep the state’s finances “in the black”.

The changes were revealed in the 2013-14 Budget Update which was released by the Victorian Government last week.

Under the budget, public transport fares will increase in line with the Consumer Price Index plus 2.5 per cent from 2015 to 2018.

The public transport weekend daily fare cap will also be adjusted to $6 Zone 1 and 2 travel to “better align weekend and weekday fares while still providing value for weekend travellers”.

Both of these changes will come into effect in January, 2014.

Two hour fares will also expire exactly two hours after touch on from July 1 2014, instead of from the start of the next full hour.

“The Budget Update demonstrates that the Coalition Government will take the necessary action to keep Victoria’s finances in the black, with a commitment to reducing debt over time,” says Treasurer Michael O’Brien.
